  • Nothing really matters

    Nothing really matters

What is the last thing you learned?

It is not that hard working people succeeds because they are working hard. Good people don’t always get good things and there is righteous people that perishes in their righteousness and there are wicked people that prolong their days. That knowledge and understanding of science and earthly knowledge does guarantee that we will get food to eat. By the time we are dying, often in hospital bed, there is nothing that really matters about our lives and all the things we have done or acquired in life. All that we ever held in great regard is no longer exciting to us.

In my days on earth, i have seen highly educated people rotting in poverty. I have seen highly intelligent and skilled people rotting in jail. Yet i have seen unschool and illiterate making millions of money and ruling and exploiting well educated people.so i concluded that it is not always true that diligent hands will succeed and prosper.

I also noted that the world is not ruled by people of talent but people that happened to be in a certain position at a particular time. I have also seen seen strong and mighty people dying like animals and have seen poor people of the land living hundred years.

There are people who has not worked very hard in life yet they live in affluence, but there are those that wake up to do donkey’s work daily, yet they die in poverty and live their offsprings to the mercy of the world.

So in my pursuit to understand what life is all about i came across the following words and agreed with them.

I also noted that that has a breath of life has potential to succeed and so anyone living in luxury has potential of sinking to misery.

I have noted that man is a very vulnerable creature that does not understand his vulnerability. He is also extremely selfish creature that follows only those things that will give him pleasure, right now or likely to make him happy later in his days. That human beings does not know exactly what they want in life, yet they are in constant pursuit of imaginary very pleasant thing that will give them the ultimate joy, yet they live the world without ever getting it. That most often all the thoughts of man is toward causing trouble and anxiety. And man is inclined toward evils than good, no wonder newsagents focus on bad news and ignore the good word. Am agreeing with this words:

I learnt that people want to have much more possessions than everybody else.

I also learnt about the ever struggle among men to dominate their neighbors, that people always want to be better than anyone else and their is comfort and joy that comes when people find that their neighbors are below them in possessions and status. I learnt that even your greatest friend is innately very unhappy when you are better than them and people are naturally jealousy. People are attached to you as long as they have something useful they can get from you and that to maintain people that surrounds you, may it be friends, lovers or wife, you must have something useful attached to you. This is what causes celebrities to be followed by many people and poor people to be abandoned even by their relatives. Women live men when they are broke and wealth men attracts a lot of women because human beings are highly attracted to things than to men. The same reason applies to us getting tools to maximize profit making in our companies at the expense of people we retrench.

That a man is in constant pursuit of comfort and avoidance of pain and so will seek people or things that can give him comfort and he/she will avoid miserable people that has been beaten by misfortunes because they make her uncomfortable. But man is never comfortable and his soul is always in search of something that can satisfy them.

When am using him, i mean both him and her because there is no neutral word to represent both.

Man is a tool animal and what makes man’s life much meaningful is his tools.

All this thing i have learnt in my pursuit of wisdom and have become sorrowful because i have seen all things as useless.

please tell me about what you make out of life in comment section.

  • Creating a web page

    Creating a web page

In order to write web pages , you will need to understand the HyperText Markup Language(HTML).

HTML is usually not considered as a programming language but rather a markup language. HTML cannot be compiled by a computer to run as programming language but is interpreted by web browsers like chrome and firefox to display a web page.

A browser is an application program that provides a way to look at and interact with all the information on the World Wide Web which includes Web pages, links, videos and images.

HTML uses structural marker called tags which are used by the web browser to determine how a web page is going to appear on a computer screen.

HTML includes markups that describes the kind of formatting needed to render a web page so that it can be viewable on a computer, tablet, phone or any other screen that acts as a website terminal.

It determines if the text will be bold, whether data should be presented as tables, what image to accompany the data etc.

HTML standards has been set so that there is uniform ways of browsers to interpret web pages. The HTML4 was replaced by the current standard which is HTML5. The first standard which was HTML2.0 was developed in 1993. HTML5 supports multimedia that could have only been a dream by then.

Here we represent a sample web page

    <HTML5>
    <head>
    <title> Hello world!</>
    </head>
    <body>
<p> Thank you for welcoming me to HTML world!</p>
    </body>
    </html>

The tag HTML5 indicates that we are using the HTML5 to define components of our page.

Each HTML element has opening and closing angle brackets. Most of the tages will have closing tag with a forward slash after the first bracket.

The web page is defined between the starting HTML tag and the ending HTML tag.

The <head>…….</head> tag defines the header information of the page.

<head> indicates starting point of the header and </head> shows the end of the head element.

<title>…..</title> is an element used to display the title of the page.

The body of the web page is all the elements between <body> and </body> tags. Whatever is between this body tags is what the user that visit the page will see.

Anything between <p> and </p> is treated as a paragraph in the web page.

For a user to access a web page, they have to write it’s uniform resource locator (url) on the address bar of the web browser. An address bar will look like as shown when you first open a browser.

url is the address of a page the user will use to access it from the internet. The addressing of web pages in the internet uses a standard called http protocol such each page address starts with https://……. and the ” …..” should be replaced by the page address.

The web page will not show the tags but only the statements between the <p>..</> tags because they are the only tags between the <body> element. see the diagram below:

Note that the statement between the title tags is the one showing on the title bar of the browser. The web address is not starting with https but showing the path to the location in my computer because it is fetched from my file system in the OS in my computer disk and not from the internet.

  • beyond failures

    beyond failures

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?

Personally i improved my social and economic life after leaving my first job. Offcourse it was very devastating for me and for the next three days after sacking letter my head was blank and could not think or be able to say anything. But it is after the incident that i got business ideas that has been helping my life today. If i had continued with employment, i would still be very poor, working soo hard for too little and wasting my life away.

Am not a lone, majority of people that has been very successful in life faced insurmountable difficulties at one point in their lives. Let us look at some few of them.

    Isaac Newton

He was born underweight and his father died shortly before his birth. His mother left him with grandmother in order to get married to another man. At 17, his mother removed him from school so that he can learn and do farming though he passionately hated farming. Today he is always considered great of all in the field of physics with hundreds of papers and many theories to his name.

    Thomas Edison

He was told by his teachers that he was too stupid to learn anything but later went ahead to have more than 1000 patents one of them being the electric lamp. He is considered as one of the most successful inventors that ever lived. He tested thousand materials before creating the carbon-filament bulb that is one of the most useful objects to billions of people in the world.

    Albert Einstein

He is considered a genius who was very famous in the field of theoretical physics. He won a Nobel prize because of his theory of relativity and changed the classical approach to physics. however, Albert Einstein was only able to speak after he was 4 years old and was only able to read after 7 years. He was thought to be mentally handicapped child, but it turned to be opposite through his persistence.

    Jerry Seinfeld

When he was trying out a career in comedy, he fronze infront of his first audience and was booed and jeered off stage, a very nasty experience that can depress any public speaker. He later corrected himself and went on to become one of the most successful comedian of all time.

    Abraham Lincoln

Always considered the most successful president of the United States of America. He was inspiring in his speech, abolished slave trade and saved united state. But Lincoln life was more identified with failures than success.

    • He fought for election in 1832 to be elected in legislator and lost
    • He started a business that badly failed
    • He lost a contest to congress in 1843
    • He lost a contest to congress in 1848
    • He lost a bid for a U.S Senator in 1855
    • Lost contest to become vice president of U.S in 1856
    • He lost a bid for a U.S Senator in 1859

He ran for President of U.S in 1860 and won. He also won it again in 1864. But his failures were enough to cause any dude to surrender to fate and permanently label himself a loser.

famous Abraham Lincoln quote, ” I have a congenital aversion to failure.”

    J.K Rowling

Received 12 rejections from publishers before his book ‘Harry Potter’ was published.

  • Basic Git configuration

    Basic Git configuration

before we start working with Github, that is, to start committing, pushing files or cloning, we need to tell git about ourselves. Git need to know who we are. We do that by use of git config command and then setting values for our email and user name. Assuming you have already installed Git into your windows machine, go to windows menu and look for ‘Git Bash’ from main menu and click it’s icon as shown.

Your Git command line should be like below when you first open it.

    git config command

we then type the two Git config command to set email and password:

You should replace the email in double quotes with the email you used to register for github and replace “YourGutHubUserName” with your github username.

the –global is the flag used to show that the value we have set should be used for all our github repositories.

If we wish, we may set different values for different repositories.

After setting our identities with github, we will need a git repository to start working with. We can have at least two ways to do that:

    • Use git init to start one from scratch or
    • use git clone to setup a repository we have already created in our local machine or somewhere else

    creating a directory

In this lesson, we are creating our repository from scratch. Let us create a directory which we will be using in this course. we will use a ‘mkdir’ command followed by the name of the directory.

we have then used the command ‘cd’ and then the name of the directory to move to the new created directory so as to have the following window

    git init command

running ‘git init’ command initializes empty repository in the current directory. A message is returned mentioning a directory called .git.

to confirm that we have created the directory, we use the ls -la command that causes the files created with the directory to be listed.

    ls -l .git/

we can also use the ‘ls -l .git/’ command to see the many things our directory contains as shown:

git directory can be thought of as a database in your git directory that stores changes and change history of your project. Anytime you clone a directory, the directory is copied into your computer.

Every time you run a git init, a new directory is intialized.

Area outside git directory is the working tree. Working tree is the conversion of your project. It can be thought of as a work bench or sandbox where you perform all the modifications you want on your file. This working tree will contain all the files being tracked by the git and any new file we have not yet added to list branch file.

Our tree file is empty, and so we need to put some file in it. we copy a certain file from my computer by opening it’s location and then copying its address bar as shown.

copying a file to the new directory

please note that the backward slashes(\) in the file path must be changed manually each to forward slashes (/) for the copying to be successful, otherwise you will get an error.

we have now copied our file to the new current directory. Note the . at the end of the path statement.

    ls -l command

The above statement after ‘ls -l’ command shows we have just copied the file to the directory.

We have now our file in the working tree but it is not being tracked by Git.

To make the git start tracking the file we add it to the project using ‘git add’ command passing the file as a parameter.

Now we have added our file to the staging area

    Staging area

A staging area also known as the index is a file maintained by Git that contains all of the information about about what files and changes are going to go into your next commit.

    git status command

we can use ‘git status’ command to get some information about the current tree and the impending changes.

our new file is labelled “to be committed”. This indicates that changes we have made to the file are currently in the staging area.

    git commit command

To make our file to be committed, we run ‘git commit’ command.

The above command will prompt opening of our default editor where we should type a commit message(comment) and then save the opened file before closing it. The bash window above shows the words “waiting for your editor to close the file” as it has paused commit execution process in order to allow you edit the file commit message.

Note that in our lessons on installing Git, we choose vsCode as the default editor, and so it has opened.

After we commit successfully, we get the following message.

We have now successfully made a git commit. You may want to type ‘git status’ to see the current tree status.

  • Phase and Phase Difference

    Phase and Phase Difference

The word phase in normal usage means any stage in a series of events or in a process of development.

cambridge University dictionary defines phase as one of the stages or points in a repeating process measured from a specific starting point.

Two Waves can be of the same amplitude but with the different frequencies as shown in figure below.

The wave profile P makes it’s one complete oscillations before wave Q. Wave P has shorter wavelength compared to Q and hence P has higher frequency.

We can also see that P has smaller period as waves with shorter wavelength has smaller period.

Wave P completes it’s first cycle at A while Q finishes it’s first oscillation at B. We can say that P is leading Q. The maximum displacement of the two waves is the same hence they are operating at the same amplitude but different frequency. The two waves are said to be out of phase.Think about two radio receivers tuned to two different stations but with equal volume.

waves can also be of the same frequency but different amplitudes. Think of when we tune in our two radio receivers to the same station and then set them at different volumes

The figure below illustrates two waves operating at same frequency but at different amplitudes.

As can be seen from the diagram, one wave is having more displacement than the other one but they are arriving at the same horizontal position simultaneously. We say they are in phase.

    Pendulum bobs in phase

To further illustrate the concept of phase and out of phase oscillations, consider two identical pendulums with bobs P and Q below.

The two masses, P and Q are set in oscillation by giving them some displacement on the left and then releasing them simultaneously. Because they have equal displacement and released at the same time , they will pass through the lowest point Y at the same time as they move on to the opposite direction.. They attain displacement together at Z and swing back together to complete the oscillation at x.

At any particular moment, the two masses will be moving in the same direction and at the same level of displacement in their oscillations. The masses are said to be oscillating in phase.

Particles in a wave motion which happens to be oscillating in the same direction and at the same level of displacement in their oscillation are said to be in phase.

The diagram below have highlighted two positions of particles A and B. The particles are in the same displacement level from the reference line and they are both facing the same direction as indicated by the arrows. The particles A and B are said to be in phase and their distance apart is the wavelength λ of the wave motion whereas time taken to move from A to B is the periodic time T.

Particles in a wave motion can be in phase even if they have different amplitude.

In our previous pendulum oscillation of mass P and Q ; If P is Initially given a larger displacement than Q, the two will oscillate i n phase even though P will always be at a larger magnitude of displacement than Q.

A typical displacement time graph for two wave motions in phase with different amplitudes is shown below.

two waves in phase at different amplitude.

    Oscillations out of phase

Consider two masses P and Q displaced from opposite directions from each other as in figure below.

When released simultaneously, they pass through the rest position at the same time as they move in the opposite direction and they reach a point of maximum displacement at the same time but their maximum displacement is in opposite direction to each other.

    180o out of phase

The two objects above are always at the opposite levels of displacement and their oscillations opposite direction to each other and they are said to be in opposite phase.

Wave motions that have same displacement and makes complete oscillations at the same time with their maximum displacements in exact opposite to each other are said to be in 180o phase difference (180o out of phase).

The figure below shows two wave motions at 180o phase difference.

    90o out of phase

suppose in our pendulum oscillations we displaces the objects P and Q to X ; we release Q before P and then we release p when Q is exactly at Y. The angle of oscillation between P and Q will be 90o in difference and the resulting oscillation will be 90o out of phase.

The displacement time graph for waves 90o out of phase is illustrated below.

two waves can be out of phase at any angle. We are likely to see that in our future lessons

  • Calculating the wave speed

From topics on linear motion, speed v is usually given as rate of change of distance with time. i.e. speed (v) =distance(s)/time(t)

Speed of a wave is the distance covered by a wave in one second.

The SI unit of a wave speed is metres per second.

Consider a particle on a wave motion that gets displaced from point A to B such that distance AB makes one wavelength as shown

The time taken to complete one oscillation is called the periodic time (T) and so the speed of the particle can be expressed in terms of wavelength (λ) and periodic time T as in the equation below.

For the particle to cover a distance of exactly one wavelength, it means it has completed exactly one oscillation.

The time taken to complete one oscillation is called the periodic time (T) and so the speed of the particle can be expressed in terms of wavelength (λ) and periodic time T as in the equation below.

λ is a greek letter known as lambda which means wavelength in english.

    but T = 1/f. hence

Multiplying both numerator and denominator by f, we get v=fλ.

v=fλ is a relationship that helps determine speed of a wave given it’s frequency and wavelength.

In a given media, the speed of a wave motion is constant and so frequency is inversely proportional to the the wavelength such that:

The above equation shows that an increase in frequency results in decrease of wavelength.

The relationship between frequency and wavelength is represented graphically as shown in figure below.

If a wavelength covers λ distance, then the total distance covered by the wave profile can be determined as λ x number of oscillations and the total time taken as periodic time x number of oscillations..

    Example Question

The figure below shows a wave form in a string. The wave is moving at 30.0ms-1 and the grid is in centimeters.

    Detrmine:

    (a) Amplitude

    (b) Wavelength

    (c) frequency

    (d) Period

    solution

    (a) amplitude is the largest displacement of the wave profile. It is the crest in the wave motion. In our diagram, the largest displacement is ±5. hence the amplitude of the wave is 5.0 cm

    (b) we can determine wavelength by determining distances between two points that are in phase. (40-0)cm or (50-10)cm or (60-20)cm. Hence the wavelength is 40cm.

    (c) v=fλ

    hence

    v= 30.0ms-1 and λ = 40 cm = 0.4m

    hence

    (d) Period T = 1/f

    Practice Question 1

Waves on a spring are produced at the rate of 200 wavelengths every 10 seconds.

    (a) Find the frequency of the wave motion. (Answer: 20 Hz)

    (b) If the wavelength of the waves is 0.15m, find the speed of the waves (Answer: 3ms-1)

    (c) Find the period of the waves (Answer: 0.05s)

    Practice Question 2

A water wave travels at 24m in 3 s. If source of the water waves vibrates at 5Hz, determine:

    (a) The speed of the wave (Answer: 8 ms-1)

    (b) The wavelength (Answer: 1.6m)

    Important objects in life

What are three objects you couldn’t live without?

Human beings is a tool being. All human life from uncivilized era even now where knowledge and technology is exploding, men depends heavily on tools. For almost every activity or work we do, there is a tool involved.

Some of the most important tools I always need in me includes:

    Knife

Eating is a very important part of life. Every three hours I will be having something to eat and it is almost impossible to prepare food in kitchen without a knife.Blessings to anyone that invented it.

    Phone

Phone is the object that I use as the access point to the world. It is a point through which I communicate with the world. If I don’t have a phone, I feel shut up from the world.

Most of us are addicted to our mobile phones and I have observed that, the first thing people do when they sit down is remove their phone from pocket and start reading something from it, mostly social media messages.

    Laptop

Unlike phone and knife that are very common and useful to everyone in the world, laptop is not an essential to many people. But for me laptop is a very handy instrument because it is what I have been using for my academic work and personal projects that I have done to bring me earnings and growth. In my professional growth , I could not do without a laptop.

    Study desk

It may not be essential to most people but I use over 90% of my out of job time on my desk. It is where I prepare lessons for my students and where I develop projects and study. Am very studios person and definitely need some where to study.

    Shoes

How on earth will we walk in the chilly mornings without our shoes. It is almost impossible to step out of the house without shoes. It is the main protection against harmful objects and chemical elements on the ground ground.

    Clothes

It is akward to refer clothes as objects but they are basic things you need. Our jumpers protects us from cold whereas pants and shirts are garments we cannot walk without.

Persuasive communication uses a persuasive language which may be written, spoken or non-verbal to get others to agree with our facts, share our values, accept our arguments and even adopt our way of thinking.

In your professional activities, the ability to persuade others to agree with your ideas and believe them in writing or in speaking is a potent communication skill.

Some people are very convincing by the way they represent themselves in that they are attractive before they speak. This people understands that persuasion goes beyond words and may include:

    • Looking presentable
    • walk or sit in a manner that shows they are comfortable with who they are.(body posture)
    • display an inviting gestures like eye contacts , smiles , open arms or other body languages that invites people to them.
    • Keep a distance that is inviting instead of being aloof and repelling.

From the above points, it is clear that non-verbal language is very vital in supplementing spoken word in our effort to communicate persuasively.

We should also be able to persuade readers in our writings. This can be done by presenting good evidence that supports our arguments and conclusions, sticking to the topic of discussion, writing a well researched or useful information and eliminating grammatical and spelling mistakes by proofreading your work.

Some of the ways to persuade people in your communication includes:

    • Presenting evidence
    • attacking and presenting opposing views as weaker
    • use of inclusive language with words like we, us, our that shows unity of purpose as opposed to words that shows individual opinions like and disconnect like i, you, them, they etc.
    • use of humour
    • showing cause and effect in your arguments

Assertiveness is the quality of being self-assured and confident. It is described as the ability to stand up against adversity or opposition in a calm and positive way without being aggressive or passive in accepting other people’s opinion or views.

Assertiveness enables you express yourself in a clear, open and reasonable manner without undermining your own rights or those of others.

Assertiveness means you can get your points across without upsetting others or getting yourself upset.

Some of the characteristics of individuals who are not assertive includes:

    • They always agree with opinion of others
    • fear being judged and so avoid raising their voice over a matter

  • Collaborative learning

    Collaborative learning

This is a type of learning where a group of learners works together on a learning task that may involves solving problem, complete a task or discuss a new concept. It is an approach that engages students such that they are able to explore information deeply beyond knowledge level. By participating in a common task, students will defend their point of view, rephrase their ideas, listen keenly to understand other student’s point of view therefore enhance understanding and retention of the knowledge gained.

    Cooperative learning

It is an teaching and learning strategy where small groups of students works together on a common assignment where each participants contributes to a specific part of the task and then the individual tasks are compiled to make one complete solution to the task at hand.

In cooperative learning, students are usually responsible for their part or role in the whole assignment but the overall success of the group depends on each and every individual effort such that failure of one means failure of the whole group. Therefore each member of the group must do the best in their assigned part of the task. Members of the group will have chance to scrutinize each others work hence learning from each other.

The role of each member is predefined and then their is a group leader that will coordinate group tasks and facilitates intergration of the individual tasks.

Collaborative and cooperative learning is not limited to classrooms but is widely used in industries where stuffs works together to accomplish a task. For example in software engineering, each individual software developer is assigned a small part of the project to work on, learn about it and devise the best solution. Engineers can collaborate together to learn a new technology and dissect a new machine . Doctors can work together to understand a surgery task or research on a new disease.

This kind of learning is very useful to our modern world has many benefits.

    i. Develop leadership skills

individuals learn how to organize themselves and others, how to manage relationships meant to accomplish a serious task and how to work on high-level ideas with others.

    ii. Increased skills and knowledge

There is more learning and retention of knowledge in collaborative learning unlike in individual study and classroom lectures because learners really engage with knowledge and learning by doing which is powerful way to learn.

Students are able to learn from others and also reinforces what they know by teaching it to others in the group.
