  • Career dreams

There is nothing like a good career

Many people talks about their dream career and defines their childhood dream as what what they wanted to be when they grow up. Most often, when people talk about their childhood dreams, they are talking about the careers they thought they should be doing when they come of age.

Those childhood dreams in terms of career does not mean that we were created to do the jobs we think we should be doing. It is the society that created our ideas about what is great or not in terms of occupation.

Most often, when we talk about dream career, we are talking about what will make us look or feel important and so that could be the main reason everybody want have that high profile job. If you ask children about their career prospects, they will often mention those careers their society holds with high regard like doctor, judge, police, pilot etc. This is because people with those careers are highly respected in society.

Little did we know that, some of the careers we want so badly have people that are depressed, wish to quit and hate it. Many of them , it was their dream job, but now it is their night mare. We usually imagine happiness and status after attaining a position but soon after few months of excitement we lapses back to our state of dissatisfaction. We are no longer happy with our new job, we become bored with routine, we meet toxic workers, nagging boss or we wish we had time to do things we like and most often, we want to quit. We want to climb the ladder, we take extra courses, we go for masters, we train and work hard so that we can compete effectively with our colleagues for the limited positions in the company we work. When we attain a certain target in our career life, we realize that we want to go further, and we spend our lives chasing this or that so as to remain competitive, involving ourselves with what we call the rat race.

Most often, it is hard to develop strong bonds with people that we spend most of day with, because we dislike them. We don’t like them because we are competing for the scarce resources that we all need. Our colleagues in office are interested with the same position we are seeking. The competition and scarcity of positions we seek causes conflicts and we hates on each other.

after settling in our job we soon realize that there are things we love, other than our job, we call them hobbies.

Some people after developing their dream career to great to heights, finds themselves resigning because they realize that what they had been pursuing all through was not what would satisfy their souls. Soon you realize that, what your parents directed you to believe is great does not satisfy you, then you join a large pool of workers with emptiness in heart that is never filled by what they do, they perpetually seem to be seeking something they feel can only be found outside their work.

Most of people stay in their jobs because they have bills to pay and children to look after. They are unhappy, thought they earn money. Working is what they do to survive, but they don’t work as a way of living.

so what would make great career?

Anything you do and makes you happen without materialistic or external motivation, and that can create value to human kind is a great career. If we remove money in life, so that you no longer need to go to job to pay the bills, if you no longer need to go to work so that you can feed your family, then the job or the kind of thing you will be doing without worrying about economy is the career you should be doing. And that should be the dream career.

According to psychologists, people are motivated to do something by a number of factors. Behavioral psychologist, Abraham Maslow described the human needs as needs that are in hierarchy. when one need is satisfied, your soon sets itself in seeking fulfillment of another need that in the hierarchy. But i guess, what people lack and rarely get in their career is the aesthetic, self-actualization and the Transcendence needs.

So people could be loving their jobs but still feel dissatisfied with it because of the working environment that prevents them from seeing the beauty of the world( aesthetic), self-actualization and does not cater for transcendence needs. For this reason, people that are highly paid in their jobs keeps resigning and changing company. Off course, they do so because they have the privileged of having skills and competence that are competitive across organizations. There are people that stays for years in an organization feeling dissatisfied and unhappy but the reason they stay is because they don’t have the means, knowledge or abilities to move. Their dream career when they were entering the industry is no longer their dream career when they are nearing the retirement age. What am trying to say is that, people don’t necessarily enjoy the job they thought they will greatly enjoy when they were searching them.

    career

    Final word

A great career is not what look prestigious in society or the one that attracts hefty pay. It is what one would do without needing an income. It is what will sustain their happiness and satisfaction for years. It is what will make them remain at peace with themselves and other people for years on end.

A great career should help you see the beauty of the world apart from earning, It is a career that will make you feel that you have are contributing something worthwhile to the world regardless of its monetary value and status.

A great career is the one that will make you create and maintain worthwhile relationships with people for all the time, not the one that makes you compete with those that should be your companion for scarce positions and privileges.

However, great career should help you and your family to lead a comfortable life.

I don’t need to be a judge or pilot to earn a good living, as long as their is fairness in remuneration and work compensation that can cater for my needs.

However, because of capitalism, people at the lower level of society are usually exploited, leading to them being dissatisfied with work life. This is because they have less negotiation power and lacks opportunities or means to protect their interests. If there is a fair society that makes people be treated well, because they are human and not because where they come from what they do, then every career is a great career, if does not cause harm to anyone.

    A great career is the one that makes you feel that you are important to mankind regardless of your position in society, It could be as simple as being a tea girl in the office, a sweeper, a janitor, teaching or whatever that attracts very attention, but as long as it is giving you opportunity to see beauty in nature, makes you have good relationship with others and makes you be at peace with spirits, then It is a good career. If your career is not having those things we have discussed, may nature provide you with a dream career:;;

    What invention could I remove

If you could un-invent something, what would it be?

Initially, when I was younger, I thought that guns were the worst thing that ever happened to human kind. Think of it, Guns has killed many people, probably much more than any other weapon of mass destruction. When I was growing up, small guns, which we used to call pistols were used as the main tool for committing robbery with violence. Organized gangs used guns to intimidate people and they could enter your house and do whatever they wanted, they could take your money, take your household goods, rape your wife and daughters while they have assigned somebody to hold the gun on your head as they accomplished their animosity as you freeze with fear in one corner of your house. It did not end there, they could enter passengers car, and amidst the journey, two or more people could remove guns at random, and then order everybody to lie down and remove everything they have in their pocket, their money, cell phones and any kind of variables, then they could order the driver to direct the vehicle into the forest where they ordered everybody to get out, undress and place all their clothes in a hip, they could then take time to go through all the clothes looking for any variable left there, they could leave over 10 passengers in cold forest as they escaped with your car.

Travelling became a nightmare, especially long distance travels. The car crimes targeted long distance travelers because they were usually traders going for goods in the city so that they can sell in their local towns. If you happens to travel at night or at lonely forested paths where traffic was not busy, your car could be shot on the tires and it become flat wheeled. Sometimes they could shoot at the dashboard or the drivers hands and then they could beat you and rob you your possessions. It was rare for people with cars to be left unharmed. many were killed and others were permanently left with injuries.

However, these crime subsided when people stopped carrying money in their pockets, but instead, used electronic forms to do business transactions. Companies that could carry your merchandise from the seller to your premises emerged, they were armed with police and guns so that they could transport variable goods to long distances. Emergence of transport services and electronic money transfer killed the robbery business whose mission was to intercept wealth on transit.

But when i came to the city, i realized that dangerous gangs did not not need guns to cause serious harms to people. Knives were used to injure and rob people. In slums they could use all kind of crude weapons to beat people, from sharp metal to piece your ribs, blunt piece of wood to strangle you or heavy metal to beat you into unconsciousness and even drugs to numb you or make you have zombie stature. Girls were ordered to undress or they be pierced with knife, or were drugged and raped. Therefore i realized that people did not need guns to cause harm, steal or rape. I also realized that guns were useful to police, otherwise they were helpless in front of dangerous criminal gangs that has learnt the ways of the street. criminal gangs with their crude weapons and wicked heart could do much more harm that the guns and it took gun shots to tame them. Therefore i concluded that, we needed guns to be secure as much as guns were source of insecurity.

One day i witnessed police used their AK 47 guns to deal with a cobra that had become a night mare to an estate, it had entered somebody’s house and no one could dare fight it because it’s poisonous saliva was more lethal than most of crude weapons people had. Also in village, police were called to deal with angry Buffalo that was sweeping people without regarding their crude weapons direct to it, were it not for police guns to tame this animals, they could have done unimaginable destruction before a solution was found. Therefore, i stopped hating guns. I think it’s inventor should be given a Nobel prize.

You see, in most of technologies, it is not the invention that is bad or harmful, it is people that are evil. According the book of genesis chapter 6 of the holy bible, people’s imaginations are always evil and dirty continuously. The inclination of human being is to do evil, and so they will find a way of using whatever is in their hands to do evil. One think i could change given abilities is the spirit of a man. Because it is the one that gives births to all evil, no grenade propel itself, not nuclear elements organized themselves to make powerful bom. It is the people that spends sleepless night trying to find ways of destroying others, mostly to benefit from other people’s possession. For example Ukrainians were leaving in peace until Russian’s president felt that their land could be us well be under his territory. Ironically, we don’t need all those things we kill for, and after few days of possessing what was making us excited, we are no longer as happy as we thought we will be after getting what we so enthusiastically fought for.

    a robot

    Artificial Intelligence (AI)

I think the greatest scam of the world is the artificial intelligence. We strive to develop machine that can learn human behavior and use million of dollars to develop their chips yet we cannot facilitate education of millions of intelligent children that cannot get education because of poverty. Well, we argue that machines are more consistent and don’t get tired, don’t get upset or don’t need rest. So with artificial intelligence, we can produce more with less costs.

But we produce for people. We want to produce more goods and services because their are people who will consume them. Machines will not need what we are producing. When we have driven people out of jobs because of innovating new efficient ways of doing things, it means we have killed their purchasing power. So will the robots that delivers our products in our doorsteps enjoy services in our hotels?, buy our high performance phone to take selfies and flock in our hotels for holidays?. Will intelligent machines need our cars and our fashionable clothing. Will they buy tickets to enjoy football in our stadiums. Eventually we may drive everybody out of work and we be left to work with only machine and transact business with them. People will be left to die beacuse of wants, and what will the manufactures do with the billions of products they will be making monthly?

    Fast moving trains

Yes, we have trains that can move at a speed of 120m/s. My simple question is, why do we need to go that fast?

  • When I felt special

Can you share a positive example of where you’ve felt loved?

One day, a house girl next door wrote to me a short note. ” hey handsome, when I see you, my whole body shiver, when you see me staring at you, just know that my eyes and heart are filled with desires to have you, that I can make you mine forever “….I have never forgotten those words. I will never forget them.

Immediately after college, I college mate and a close friend of mine after few months of separation, called me during my birthday out of nowhere and suddenly sang happy birthday to me for me with the whole class she was teaching.

During COVID-19, I visited my girlfriend and she took 3 hours baking cake, 🎂🎈🎉, just for me.

And I sang her the song ” you r like a lovely land to me, you have doves eyes my love”….and the whole week, she kept asking me to sing the song for her .

Another time I felt special is when my girlfriend kept calling me at night just to tell me she wanted to hear me talk, and we talked from early evening to morning. I never slept. I was sleepy at work and when my colleagues showed concern, I just smiled it off.

when I visited my sister last year, she cooked chapatis for me to eat and to carry some for myself because I was living alone.

Another moments when I have felt special is when I was sick and mum carried me at her back to take me to hospital. I was 14 by them.

When I visit home, the kind of effort mum shows to make a special meal for me. Just for me

  • Clutter in life

How can you reduce clutter in your life?

Cluttering in life occurs when your life is disorganized.

Clutter is when you have things in your life that strains your capacity to manage. Clutter can be emotional, mental or even physical. However, physical clutter could be a sign you have mental and emotional clutter.

Clutter is a phenomena where we have confusion and lack of direction because we have allowed so many distractions in our life.

mental clutter is when you think about so many things at the same time without clarity.

Physical clutter is seen in things we keep and how keep them.

Emotional clutter can occur can occur when you have emotional attachment with many people.

A person with a cluttered life is a person who is holding more than they can manage.

Surprisingly, people whose life are cluttered are usually quite intelligent and very ambitious. Their essence of being ambitious makes them accumulate things in life. They could also be people that are nice and easy going that could be accepting too much from people. For instance, people that accepts too many requests for help or otherwise.

Do you usually finds it difficult to resist an offer for a new course, or an invitation to attend a function? Then you are a candidate for clutter.

If you have a cluttered life, you may have desks that are piled with things. Papers are full on your desk, your computer is full of files on the desktop such that you will take time and effort to trace any particular file and the number of icons cannot even all fit on the screen.

Your sitting rooms could be having things randomly scattered all over.

You take a lot of time to trace a misplaced item like a TV remote in a house you live alone. Your bedroom has pile of dirty and clean clothes that co-exists together.

Another sign your life is cluttered is that you wash clothes and when they are dry, you don’t put them in the right place, you can postpone arranging them and you find yourself looking from a pile of clean clothes what to wear. Before you know it, all your clean clothes are dirty again before you arranged any of them.

People with cluttered life usually have soo much to do at their hands but ends up doing very little. They feel overwhelmed by the number of things they are likely to accomplish and this may cause anxiety and compromise their ability to concentrate on a productive cause.

    Effects of cluttered life

    Loss of productivity

Cluttered life causes loss of productivity, time and strain relationships. When you have too much to do, you lack time to nurture meaningful relationships. Because of clutter, you may lack time to go out and create meaningful relationships because you end up being busy all the time and cannot manage time.

A coping mechanism for a person with cluttered life is procrastination.

people with cluttered life are usually distracted by new things. Usually they are overwhelmed by the number of things they need to do and so they pick new activities as a way to manage stress from overwhelming things around them. There is usually feeling of helplessness in the person because their clutter makes them weary.

    wasting time

People with cluttered life usually wastes a lot of time because they take long time before they start doing what they need to do. For example if you have a cluttered desk, you easily misplaces files and tools of work. You ends up spending a lot of time looking for things. A person could spend substantial amount of time trying to find a file they were working on or a tool they have misplaced. They end up wasting time and they find that by the end of the day they have accomplished very little.

    Stress

Time wasted when looking for things in clutter causes mental stress because you desired to accomplish much but now you feel frustrated because you had done very little by end of the day. The result is that you try to find coping mechanism by looking for more appealing activities like scrolling a phone or watching a video on the laptop, postponing activities that are giving you mental stress. you find yourselves lagging behind in projects and not completing your assignments on time. This can strain relationships with your boss causing you more stress. People with cluttered life are always stressed people making it difficult to harness their potential to achieve anything substantial. So clutter can cause you to fail in life.

    hyper activity

People with cluttered life cannot have rest because they feel guilt when not doing something, and because they cannot rest, the don’t produce quality solutions to problems, hence they achieves very little. Clutter can cause you relationships because you are likely to lack emotional control as you are always stressed. Emotional outbursts can strain relationships at work and hinder career progression.

    How to remove clutter

    Manage yourself

No matter how busy your schedule become, be calm, don’t bow down to the feeling of urgency to keep doing something even when your body demand rest. Take a break, go and have nice time with friend, go and have a nice meal in a restaurant, you are not the one keeping the earth in it’s motion, relax.

    Avoid procrastination

Do first things fast. Don’t postpone making your bed until later time. Fold your clothes immediately without waiting for a convenient time. Don’t postpone anything.

    Be selective

Not very good deal that needs your attention. Just have feel few things to do. Avoid being distracted from important things in your life by some appealing activities. You don’t have to enroll for an online course that seems a super deal for your career. Go us of few things that can add value and not wide range of interests

    Be neat

Take time to look for nice clothes for yourself, you works too hard, you deserve nice things. Groom yourself.

Ensure your desk or your house is not cluttered. Where necessarily, hire somebody who can arrange things professionally in your office if you find it difficult doing it yourself, after few times if paying their wages, you will learn the importance of being orderly and what positive energy it can bring to your brain.

    Be professional

Arrange things in folders in your computer. Don’t fill your laptop desktop with files which will cause you spend useful time looking for things in your computer. Have a pattern of saving files. It can be frustrating when you have to spend half an hour trying to look for a file you created few days ago. Ask somebody from IT to help if it is difficult to manage your files in the computer.

    Say no

Don’t be the nice guy in office that always pick tasks yet you have too much to do. Learn to tell people you cannot take any more. After all, when you burn out and become unproductive, they will accuse you for it.

    Have a plan

Determine what activities you need to accomplish at a specific time and schedule for it. Break down a huge task into small chunks that can be finished within a given unit of time like an hour, 2 hours, half a day or even a day. Stick to your schedule and don’t pick some extra tasks in between.

    Check your desires

There is a wise saying by king Solomon that says “A bird at hand is better that wondering of desires”. Don’t desire people that wont like you. Some people have emotional baggage because they don’t love people that loves but and they are always disturbed and angry because they love people that wont love them back. It is amazing how we often does that. Don’t ignore people that likes you as you pursue those that don’t like you. This way, you have better emotional support. don’t go for things you like in people, beauty and material things excites just for a short time, go for people that truly loves you, because only then you will have long lasting joy and stability.

Practice this for a month and let me know if it has not brought positive change to your life by sending me a comment.

  • Introduction to thin lenses

    Other topics

A lens can be defined as a piece of curved glass or plastic that makes things look larger, smaller or clearer when you look through it.

In human eye, one component is a lens and so we can also define lens as the transparent part of the eye, behind the pupil, that focuses light so that you can see clearly.

The idea behind lens operations is that when a light ray passes from air which is more optically denser than the lens material, it is refracted.

When many rays passes through the lens, they all refracted the same way and so they meet at a common point. Sometimes they don’t meet but instead they are scattered after refraction but they are seemed to be spreading from a common point.

Lenses are usually made of glass, transparent plastic or perspex.

common application of lenses includes cameras, spectacles, telescopes, microscopes, film projectors and the human eye.

    eye glasses
    Types of lenses

The basic two types of lenses are convex and concave lenses.

Convex lenses are also called converging lenses as they cause the rays that passes through it to meet at a point. Convex lenses are thickest at the middle and they thin in as you move towards their edge.

In this lesson we will be talking about biconvex lenses meaning that it is symmetrical if we cut it long it’s edges. Both sides of it’s services at the center are bulging outwards and the edges are curved inwards uniformly on both sides.see the figure below

    Bi convex lens
    showing symmetrical in bi-convex lens

Concave lenses are also called diverging lenses as they cause the rays passing through them to be spreading from a common pint. Concave lenses are thinnest at the middle and they they become thicker as you move towards the edges.

    Illustrating concave lens
    illustrating bi-concave lens

There are variations of convex and concave lenses as illustrated in figures below

    plano convex lens
    convex meniscus lens
    plano concave lens
    concave meniscus lens

Effects of lenses on Parallel rays of light

A cardboard with parallel slits is placed between the mirror and a bi-convex lens as in figure below

The mirror is set such that it reflects the sun rays so that the rays passes through the slits before they reach the lens.

After making observations, the bi-convex lens is replaced with a concave lens

    Observation

when a convex lens is used, the rays are converged at a point on the paper and then diverge as they continue as shown.

illustrations of parallel rays as they pass through a bi-convex lens

When concave lens is used , the rays diverge as if they were from the focal point in front of the lens as shown.

illustrations of parallel rays as they pass through a biconcave lens

Investigating convergence and divergence of light using a ray box

A ray box acts as a source of parallel beam. A spot light can also be used.

A parallel beam is directed incident to the the lens as shown

Parallel rays of light incident to a convex lens

A white paper is placed on the other side of the lens and it’s position adjusted until a sharp point is observed.

    observation

When a convex lens is used, the rays are converged at a point on the paper and then diverges as they continue as shown below

Parallel beam after passing through a converging lens

If convex lens was replaced with concave (diverging) lens, the rays will be observed diverging as if they are coming from a point on the other side of the lens. see the diagram below.

Parallel beam incident to diverging lens

    Explanations

Light is usually refracted when it passes through a glass prism. A lens can be considered as an assembly of many tiny prisms where each prism refracts light as in figure below.

Illustrations of bi-convex lens as an assembly of prisms

Please note that, the middle part of the prism is like a rectangular glass prism and a ray that is incident to it at a perpendicular angle passes through without being refracted. As we may see in other lessons, a ray of light that passes normally through the geometrical center of the lens, passes through undeviated.

The figure below shows representation of concave lens as an assembly of prisms.

illustrations of concave lens as an assembly of prisms

    conclusions

Rays of light that passes through a lens converges at a fixed point from the lens if the lens is a converging lens or diverge from a common imaginary point if the lens is a diverging lens.

The point at which the rays emerging from the lens converge or seems to diverge from is referred to as the principal focus.

A convex lens has a real principal focus while a concave lens has a virtual (imaginary) principal focus.
